After Tigers, Lions are the second largest big cat species in the world.

The lion is a magnificent animal  that is considered as a  symbol of power, courage and nobility on family crests in many civilizations.

In the past lions lived in most parts of Africa, but are now confined to the sub-Saharan region. But today only a very small population remains in India.

Lions are the national animal of Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, England, Ethiopia, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Singapore.

The average male lion weighs around 180 kg while the average female lion weighs around 130 kg.

Like tigers Male lions mark their territory by spraying a combination of urine and scent from glands at the base of their tails.

An interesting information of lions is that most lions drink water daily if available, but they can live four or five days without it. Lions in arid areas seem to obtain needed moisture from the stomach contents of their prey.

The heaviest lion weighed an amazing 375 kg. The roar of a lion can be heard from 8 kilometers away.

Lionesses not only secure dinner but serve the males first, even before the cubs. They are more caring to males !

One of  the laziest of the big cats

They usually spend 16 to 20 hours a day sleeping and resting, devoting the remaining hours to hunting, courting or protecting their territory. They keep in contact with one another by roaring loudly.

Male and female lions differ in their size and appearance. Female lion are smaller than males. Females also lack a mane. Males have a thick, woolly mane of fur that frames their face and covers their neck.
